Why Sleep Comes in Cycles
Sleep is not uniform. It moves through repeating cycles of roughly 90 minutes, each passing through light sleep, deep slow-wave sleep and REM sleep before returning toward the surface.
Waking at the end of a cycle, when you are naturally close to light sleep, feels easy. Being woken in the middle of deep sleep produces sleep inertia — the heavy, disoriented feeling that can persist for half an hour or more. This is why seven and a half hours often feels better than eight.

What Actually Improves Sleep
- Keep a consistent schedule, including weekends. Regularity matters more than total hours for how rested you feel.
- Get morning daylight. Bright light early anchors the circadian clock more powerfully than anything else.
- Keep the room cool and dark. Around 18–20°C suits most people; core temperature must fall for sleep to begin.
- Stop caffeine 8–10 hours before bed. Its half-life is about five hours, so a 3 pm coffee still has a quarter of its dose active at 1 am.
- Avoid alcohol before bed. It shortens the time to fall asleep and then suppresses REM and fragments the second half of the night.
- Leave the bed if you cannot sleep. After about 20 minutes, get up and do something dull in dim light; lying awake trains the brain to associate bed with wakefulness.
The Limits of Cycle Timing
The 90-minute figure is an average. Real cycles run 70–120 minutes, vary between people, and change through the night. Treat the times here as useful targets rather than precise instructions — and never choose fewer cycles over more simply to hit a boundary. Total sleep matters more than cycle alignment.
