Why Body Fat Matters More Than Weight
The scale measures everything at once: muscle, fat, bone, organs and water. Body fat percentage separates the component that actually carries health risk from the components that do not. Two people at 180 pounds and the same height can be at 12% and 32% body fat, with entirely different metabolic profiles, and BMI cannot tell them apart.
Some fat is essential. It cushions organs, insulates the body, stores energy and is required for hormone production and vitamin absorption. Below roughly 6% in men and 14% in women, essential functions begin to fail.
The U.S. Navy Method
This calculator's primary method uses circumference measurements, developed by the Naval Health Research Center in the 1980s and still used for military body composition standards. It requires only a tape measure and typically falls within 3–4 percentage points of a hydrostatic weighing result.

All measurements are in centimetres. The equation works because abdominal circumference correlates strongly with total fat, while neck circumference acts as a proxy for frame size.
How to take the measurements
- Neck — just below the larynx, with the tape sloping slightly downward at the front. Do not flex.
- Waist — men measure at the navel; women at the narrowest point of the torso. Take the reading at the end of a normal exhale, without pulling the tape tight.
- Hip (women) — at the widest point of the buttocks.
- Measure at the same time of day, ideally in the morning before eating, and take each measurement three times and average them. A one-centimetre error at the waist shifts the result by roughly one percentage point.
The BMI Method
The Deurenberg equation estimates body fat from BMI, age and sex. It requires no measuring tape but is markedly less accurate for anyone whose body composition is unusual for their BMI — athletes in particular.
Adults: BF% = 1.20 × BMI + 0.23 × age − 10.8 × sex − 5.4
Children: BF% = 1.51 × BMI − 0.70 × age − 3.6 × sex + 1.4

Health Risks of Excess Body Fat
Where the fat sits matters as much as how much there is. Visceral fat, packed around the abdominal organs, is metabolically active and releases inflammatory compounds directly into the portal circulation. Subcutaneous fat on the hips and thighs is comparatively benign. This is why waist circumference predicts cardiovascular risk better than total body fat, and why a waist above 40 inches in men or 35 inches in women is a warning sign regardless of BMI.
Sustained excess body fat is associated with type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidaemia, coronary artery disease, stroke, sleep apnea, fatty liver disease, osteoarthritis and several cancers.
Risks of Too Little Body Fat
Dropping below essential levels causes hormonal disruption, loss of menstruation in women, reduced testosterone in men, impaired immune function, bone density loss, poor temperature regulation and severe fatigue. Competitive bodybuilders reach 4–5% for a single day of competition and cannot sustain it; treating stage condition as a year-round target is a route to injury and endocrine damage.
