Roof Area Is Not Footprint Area
A pitched roof covers more surface than the building beneath it. The steeper the pitch, the greater the difference. Converting between the two is the whole job of this calculator.
Roof area = Footprint × √(1 + (rise ÷ run)2)
This is the Pythagorean theorem: the rafter is the hypotenuse of a triangle whose base is the horizontal run and whose height is the rise. A 6/12 pitch gives √(1 + 0.25) = 1.118, so the roof is 11.8% larger than the footprint.

Measuring Pitch Safely
You do not need to climb onto the roof. From inside the attic, hold a level horizontally against a rafter, mark 12 inches along it, and measure vertically from that mark to the underside of the rafter. That vertical measurement is the rise per 12 inches of run — the pitch. A 6-inch reading is a 6/12 pitch.
Alternatively, measure the same 12-inch triangle against a gable end from a ladder, or use a smartphone inclinometer against a rafter and convert: pitch = 12 × tan(angle).

How many bundles of shingles do I need?
Three per square for standard three-tab shingles. A 2,000 sq ft roof is 20 squares, or 60 bundles, before waste.
Can I shingle over an existing roof?
Most codes allow two layers total, but it is rarely wise. The old layer hides deck damage, adds weight, and shortens the new roof's life by trapping heat.
What is the minimum pitch for asphalt shingles?
2/12 with a doubled underlayment, and 4/12 for standard installation. Below 2/12 you need a membrane roof, not shingles.
Does the overhang count?
