Three Things Ratios Are Used For

A ratio compares quantities of the same kind. In practice, almost every ratio problem is one of three tasks:

  • Simplify — reduce 36 : 48 to 3 : 4 by dividing both sides by their greatest common divisor.
  • Solve a proportion — find the missing value when two ratios are equal, by cross-multiplying.
  • Divide a total — split an amount into parts according to a ratio.

Simplifying

Divide both sides by their greatest common divisor. For 36 : 48, the GCD is 12, giving 3 : 4. The simplified form carries the same information in the smallest whole numbers, which is why recipes, maps and mixing instructions are always written that way.

Equivalent ratios are the same relationship at different scales: 3 : 4 = 6 : 8 = 9 : 12 = 30 : 40. Multiplying both sides by anything preserves the ratio.

Solving Proportions

A : B = C : D  →  A × D = B × C

Cross-multiplication turns a proportion into a single equation. If 3 kg of flour makes 48 rolls, how much makes 80? Set up 3 : 48 = x : 80, cross-multiply to 48x = 240, giving x = 5 kg.

The only rule that matters: keep the units in the same position on both sides. Mixing them — flour to rolls on one side and rolls to flour on the other — is the most common error in proportion problems.

Dividing a Total

Add the parts, divide the total by that number, then multiply by each share. Splitting $420 in the ratio 3 : 4 gives 7 parts, each worth $60, so the shares are $180 and $240. This handles profit splits, inheritance divisions and any allocation problem stated as a ratio.

Part-to-Part and Part-to-Whole

A ratio of 3 : 4 is part-to-part — three of one thing for every four of another. The corresponding fractions are part-to-whole: 3/7 and 4/7. Confusing the two turns 3 : 4 into "three quarters" instead of "three sevenths", and it is the single most frequent mistake with ratios.

Aspect ratios (16 : 9), map scales (1 : 25,000), gear ratios, mixing ratios for concrete and fuel, financial ratios such as debt-to-income, and odds in betting — where 3 : 1 against means a 1 in 4 chance, another part-to-part figure regularly misread as part-to-whole.

Can a ratio have more than two terms?

Yes. Concrete is commonly mixed 1 : 2 : 4 for cement, sand and aggregate. The same rules apply — simplify by the GCD of all terms, and divide totals by the sum of all parts.

What is the difference between a ratio and a fraction?

A fraction is a part of a whole. A ratio compares two separate quantities. Every ratio can be written as a fraction, but the fraction 3/4 and the ratio 3 : 4 describe different situations.

How do I write a ratio as a percentage?

Convert to part-to-whole first. For 3 : 4, the total is 7, so the shares are 42.9% and 57.1%.
