Counting Days
The number of days between two dates is a subtraction once both are expressed as a day count from a common origin. The subtlety is not the arithmetic but the convention: does the count include the end date?
| Convention | 1 Jan to 5 Jan | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| Exclusive (days between) | 4 days | Elapsed time, interest, age |
| Inclusive (both endpoints) | 5 days | Holidays, hospital stays, event durations |
A hotel stay from the 1st to the 5th is four nights but five days of the trip. Both answers are correct for their purpose, which is why this tool lets you choose.
Weekdays and Weekends
Every seven consecutive days contain exactly five weekdays and two weekend days, so any span divides into a whole number of weeks plus a remainder whose composition depends on which weekday it starts on. The calculator walks the span day by day rather than approximating, so the split is exact.
| Period | Total days | Weekdays | Weekend days |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 week | 7 | 5 | 2 |
| 1 month (average) | 30.44 | ~21.7 | ~8.7 |
| 1 quarter | ~91 | ~65 | ~26 |
| 1 common year | 365 | 260 or 261 | 104 or 105 |
| 1 leap year | 366 | 261 or 262 | 104 or 105 |
Note that the weekday count excludes public holidays, which differ by country and even by region. Subtract them separately if you need true working days.
Leap Years
A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, except centuries, unless divisible by 400. So 2024 and 2000 were leap years; 1900 and 2100 are not. Any span crossing 29 February gains a day, which is why two apparently identical periods can differ by one.
Common Countdowns
| Occasion | Typical planning horizon |
|---|---|
| Wedding | 300–500 days |
| Pregnancy | 280 days from the last period |
| Academic year | ~180 school days |
| Standard mortgage term | 10,958 days (30 years) |
| Retirement at 65 from 40 | ~9,131 days |
| Notice period | 30, 60 or 90 days |
Where Exact Day Counts Matter
- Contracts and notice periods. "Within 30 days" is usually counted from the day after service, excluding the first day and including the last.
- Interest and penalties. Financial day counts use conventions such as actual/365 or 30/360, which deliberately differ from calendar days.
- Visas and residency. Rules such as the Schengen 90/180 limit require counting days present within a rolling window.
- Statutes of limitation. Legal deadlines are usually counted in calendar days, with specific rules when the last day falls on a weekend or holiday.
- Medical dosing and follow-up. Protocols specify exact day intervals from a baseline date.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many days until Christmas?
Leave the start date as today and set the end date to 25 December. The result also shows the countdown from today explicitly.
Should I count the end date?
For elapsed time, no. For a duration people will experience — a trip, a holiday, a hospital stay — yes. Contracts usually specify which, and legal deadlines commonly exclude the first day and include the last.
Does the calculator handle dates in the past?
Yes. If the end date is earlier than the start, it reports the same count and notes the direction.
Are public holidays excluded from the weekday count?
No. Holidays vary by country, state and industry, so the weekday figure counts Monday to Friday only. Subtract the holidays that apply to you.
