Body Type Calculator

The Body Type Calculator is a free online tool that estimates your somatotype — ectomorph, mesomorph or endomorph — from frame size and body measurements. The categories describe tendencies rather than fixed destinies, and this explains what they do and do not predict.

The Three Somatotypes

William Sheldon proposed the somatotype system in the 1940s, classifying bodies as ectomorph, mesomorph or endomorph. His original theory linked these to personality traits and has been thoroughly discredited. What survives is the descriptive part — body shapes do differ in ways that affect training and nutrition responses.

TypeFrameTypical traitsTraining emphasis
EctomorphNarrowLong limbs, small joints, finds gaining difficultHeavier loads, lower volume, ample calories
MesomorphMedium to broadNaturally muscular, responds quickly to trainingBalanced strength and conditioning
EndomorphWideStores fat readily, gains strength wellHigher activity, closer attention to intake

Frame Size From the Wrist

Wrist circumference is a practical proxy for skeletal frame, because it carries almost no fat or muscle. Dividing height by wrist circumference gives a frame index:

FrameMenWomen
SmallRatio above 10.4Ratio above 11.0
Medium9.6–10.410.1–11.0
LargeBelow 9.6Below 10.1

Frame size explains part of why two people of the same height have different healthy weight ranges, and why BMI is a blunt instrument at the extremes.

Almost Nobody Is a Pure Type

Most people are combinations — a mesomorph-endomorph who builds muscle easily and stores fat readily, or an ecto-mesomorph who is lean and responds well to training. Sheldon's own system scored all three dimensions from 1 to 7 rather than assigning a single label.

What It Does and Does Not Determine

Body type describes starting conditions and tendencies. It does not set limits. An endomorph can become lean; an ectomorph can build substantial muscle. Both may need different approaches and different timeframes to get there, which is the useful part of the framework.

What matters far more than type: consistency, progressive overload, adequate protein, sleep, and total calories. No training programme should be selected on somatotype alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my body type change?

Skeletal frame does not change after growth stops. Body composition changes substantially, so someone may appear to move from endomorph toward mesomorph through training and fat loss.

Should I eat differently for my body type?

The claim that ectomorphs need more carbohydrate and endomorphs fewer has little direct evidence. Individual differences in insulin sensitivity and appetite matter more, and neither maps cleanly onto body shape.

Is this scientifically valid?

As a description of physique, partially. As a predictor of personality, temperament or destiny, no — that part of the theory has been rejected. Treat it as a rough starting point, not a diagnosis.
